Damona recently appeared on CBS Mornings to discuss the current state of dating and share insights from her new book, “F the Fairy Tale.”
During the segment, Damona highlighted some of the common issues she’s observed in modern romance, including unrealistic expectations and the exhausting quest for a “perfect” soulmate. She explored why these mindsets can actually hinder people’s search for meaningful connections and keep them from writing their own authentic love stories.
The conversation wasn’t just about identifying problems, though. Damona also shared her perspective on what truly matters in building lasting relationships.
Instead of focusing on superficial checklists or fairy tale ideals, she emphasized the importance of shared goals, aligned values, strong communication, and trust. These are the real pillars of long-term compatibility that Damona has identified through years of coaching.
Life on dating apps is chaotic, says Damona Hoffman, a certified dating coach whose dozens of clients look for love on Grindr, eharmony and more.
After the pandemic, hopeful romantics watched their inboxes fill with “hi” and “sup.” But where did it lead? Ghosting, or ending a relationship by cutting contact, has gone through the roof recently, she said, and many online daters are burned out.

There’s a myriad of benefits for speed dating: You have to get dressed only once for multiple dates, catfishing isn’t an issue like on dating apps, safety is less of a concern because you’ll be with other people in a public place, and the dates are quick (which is great if you’re not feeling a romantic vibe). But above all, relationship experts agree that rapid dating gives you the opportunity to get back into the groove, especially if you’ve been out of the game for a while.

“There’s certainly a case to be made for unfollowing an ex,” says Damona Hoffman, a dating coach and Host of The Dates & Mates Podcast. “When a relationship ends, we usually need time and space to heal and process what happened, and social media makes it difficult to maintain distance.”
Keeping a person who isn’t in your life on your feed can keep you “emotionally tethered to them,” and watching them move on – however curated it may be – can be painful, Hoffman adds. But there are times when moving on from a relationship isn’t as simple as hitting “unfollow,” particularly if one shares children, work or finances with an ex.
“Publicly unfollowing an ex might create more discomfort than following them,” she adds. “A good option is to snooze their posts until you have an opportunity to get some distance and closure. That way they don’t know that you are blocking them but you are protecting yourself from seeing hurtful posts.”

“Moving in together after meeting, getting engaged, and honeymooning in under three weeks is tough. Damona Hoffman — a certified dating coach, host of the Dates & Mates podcast, and a consultant for The Drew Barrymore Show — knows well how an accelerated, TV-friendly timeline can shape a relationship. ‘Time moves more quickly, and you cling to your matches like a life raft when you know that you have limited time to meet your person and every move you make could be scrutinized down the road by the viewers,’ Hoffman tells Bustle over email.
But some experiences, like moving in together, aren’t just hard on TV. Couples have a lot to consider when taking this step, from big-picture things like finances and plans for the future, to smaller details like how to keep the kitchen clean and how to decorate a shared space. So as the Season 4 couples shack up onscreen, Hoffman is here to share her expertise.”
